GROUP PROJECT

PROJECT IDEA

The group project follows the development of a visual narrative from the initial concept and character exploration through to the design of the bus and bus-stop environment. We explored different character designs before developing the visual direction further through references and 2D sketches. These concepts were then translated into a 3D environment, with the bus stop being developed by adding structural and environmental details. My contribution included working on the green-screen compositing, bringing the filmed elements together with the designed environment to create the final sequence. The project gave me experience in connecting story development, visual design, 3D asset creation and compositing as part of a collaborative VFX workflow.

FILMING

Before filming, we first created the scene in CGI and established the lighting for the 3D environment. We then recreated the lighting setup as closely as possible in the green-screen studio so that the live-action footage would match the CGI scene during compositing. The actors were positioned according to the planned shots, with floor markers used to maintain consistent placement. Multiple takes were recorded to capture the required movements and interactions. This approach helped create a consistent visual connection between the live-action footage and the CGI environment, making the later green-screen keying and compositing process more effective.

GREENSCREEN REMOVAL

After filming, I brought the footage into Nuke to remove the green-screen background and isolate the actor. I created separate core and edge keys, refined the matte, and used despill to remove unwanted green contamination around the subject. The alpha matte was then cleaned and refined to preserve the natural edges and details of the actor. This process produced a clean foreground element that could be integrated into the CGI environment during the final compositing stage.

COMPOSITING

Once the green screen was removed, I moved on to integrating the isolated actor into the CGI environment. I adjusted the actor’s position and scale to match the scene, while also working on the lighting and colour to create a consistent connection between the live-action footage and the digital environment. The different elements were then organised and combined in Nuke to build the final composite.

FINAL VIDEO

For this project, I worked on the compositing of the green screen footage, integrating the filmed subject into the intended environment. The process involved removing the green background through keying, refining the edges and then combining the foreground footage with the replacement background. I also worked on matching the colour, lighting and overall appearance of the elements so that the subject felt more naturally integrated into the scene. This stage allowed me to apply the compositing techniques I had developed and understand how different elements need to be balanced to create a convincing final shot.

BREAKDOWN

This breakdown presents the different stages involved in creating the final group project, showing how the shot progressed from the original green-screen footage to the completed composite. It demonstrates the process of green-screen removal, actor integration, CGI environment compositing, lighting and colour matching, and final adjustments. The breakdown highlights how the individual live-action and digital elements were gradually combined in Nuke to create a cohesive final result.
